Don't try heading to the Central Library today. You won't get inside.

The Los Angeles Public Library's new five-day-a-week schedule went into effect yesterday, leaving the Central Library and all branches open just Tuesday through Saturday.

The move was made after the city moved forward with the layoffs of nearly 100 library employees.

A proposed $39 yearly parcel tax could provide funding relief, but not for a while. The city debated putting the measure on November's ballot, but decided against it because of the $4.2 million that the county would charge to administer the polling. The plan will instead wait for the next city-administered election.

The Central Library is now open Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 8pm; and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5:30pm.
