A 35-year-old man is dead this morning after an overnight shooting that took place just outside the Central Police Station on the 500 block of Maple Ave.

The shooting took place around 12:45am. “At first look, it appears the victim was the intended target,” said Lt. Paul Vernon, head of detectives for Central Division. “The victim did not live or sleep on Skid Row.”

Witness reports say that an argument between the victim and another man may have preceded the shooting. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vernon encouraged anyone with information to call Detective Patricia Hauck, Central Homicide Unit, at (213) 842-0727.

The homicide is Downtown's third for 2010. The 74-year-old manager of a Toy District hotel was fatally stabbed in January and a 41-year-old man was killed near 6th and Los Angeles on April 16. Arrests were made in both incidents.
