ESPN's extreme sports kicks off its seventh year in Los Angeles today, and the old dog has a few new tricks for 2010. Competition that had in past years been split between Staples Center and the Home Depot Center is now concentrated on L.A. Live and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for X Games 16, and a free fan fest on Nokia Plaza offers those without tickets a way to get into the action for free.

Back in 2007, construction for L.A. Live sent many of the events that had taken place outdoors in the parking lots around Staples Center packing. Outdoor action returns to the complex this year, with skateboard and BMX street courses taking up the top of the L.A. Live Event Deck.

Competitors in the skateboard and BMX vert competitions could feel a little extra pressure to perform in 2010. Their ramp is on stage at the Nokia Theatre, site of numerous awards shows including the ESPYs.

The big air ramp that had been crammed into Staples Center in past years has been moved down to the Coliseum, as have the rally car events that were held at the Home Depot Center. The Downtown area will still host a handful of moto events, including Step Up, Best Whip and Speed and Style.

The Nokia Plaza "X Fest" opens at 9am daily, closing at 5pm on Thursday and Saturday and at 7pm on Friday and Sunday. It offers athlete appearances, merchandise, giveaways, radio booths and more.

Competition runs through Sunday, August 1.
