Win Tickets to See Walking With Dinosaurs at Staples Center

Walking With Dinosaurs Joan Marcus

Tyrannosaurus Rex from Walking With Dinosaurs.

Over 200 million years in the making, Walking With Dinosaurs returns to the Staples Center this month with 17 life-sized beasts representing ten species of dinos.

Based on the BBC educational program, this theatrical show features life size animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Plateosaurus, Utahraptor and other dinosaurs scaling as much as 36 feet tall and 56 feet long. With the help of Huxley, a human paleontologist, the audience is told about climate change, the evolution of dinosaurs walking on two hind legs, and their ultimate extinction after a comet struck the earth.

Designed by Sonny Tilders, an animatronics engineer who previously worked with Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the dinosaurs weigh up to 1.6 tons and require three operators; a driver and two puppeteers to control the dino's body and face movement.

Walking With Dinosaurs first came to Staples Center in 2008 as part of an initial two year North American tour, which has since been extended another year. According to organizers, the reptile ensemble have had an audience of more than 4.1 million people in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Walking with Dinosaurs opens September 9 and runs through September 12.

Want to see the show? We've got two pairs of tickets to see the 7pm show on Thursday, September 9, plus you'll get a $20 gift certificate to LA Cafe. Just leave a comment letting us know why you should win. Contest runs through Friday at 6pm. Winner must be able to pick up tickets Saturday through Tuesday at LA Cafe, 639 S. Spring.

I should win because I read Jurassic Park like 20 times when I was 10, and I'm wearing a T-Rex shirt right now!

I have an entire drawer in my dresser devoted to Dinosaur shirts.

Also, this combines dinosaurs and muppet-y-ness 2 of my 3 favorite things. The only thing missing is beer.

Because My wife has an unhealthy obsession with Dinosaurs for an adult. She would freak out on a Jurassic level. Not to mention LA Cafe is one of our favorite neighborhood favorites.

I think I should win because without a doubt, I have the worst haircut of anyone who has commented so far. The lopsided recon wears like a french beret. And it will scare the vejesus out of these dinasaurs...and the rest of Staples Center too!

Marcella Dover on September 01, 2010, at 10:36AM – #10

I should win because I literally GASPED at my desk when I saw this opportunity to win! I pledge to never outgrow my childhood love of dinosaurs - and besides, I've actually never been in the Staples Center! How awesome of a first-time experience would that be to see it filled with prehistoric beasts?!?

My three kids should win both pairs of tickets because they are native downtowners, born & breed. We are taking the train into Union Station that weekend celebrate Daddy's birthday. We will be checking out the Natural History Museum. Seeing these dinosaurs would be a real treat.

I'd actually mentioned this show to my kids. There is now a lively debate debate in the household about dinosaurs and whether they really exist. My 7-year daughter Brisa is advocating skepticism. Empirical evidence supports her claim. However, my twin 4-year sons, Max & Malcolm, whose grasp of reality is still emerging, argue that they see dinosaurs on TV and in books all the time. Therefore, they must exist.

I've tried to stay above the fray of this debate. As their father, I'd love to drop this show into the mix. Should be a lot of fun to see their little faces as the dinosaurs lumber on stage.

If we are so fortunate to be selected as winners of the the tickets, we promise to write up a report for blogdowntown which will warm the hearts of all downtowners.

I should win because it'll be a great gift for my father who took me to see Jurassic Park as a child. This was a great father/son memory that has stuck out to us for years and we see the movie as something that symbolizes our relationship because it reminds of great times. This would be the ultimate gift for my dad even though his birthday is on Sept 7(close enough for me though).

And plus, he's never been inside Staple Center his whole despite us living a 5 minute drive from the place. So these tickets would be perfect for him.

Please choose me!

Shawn Martinez on September 01, 2010, at 12:58PM – #13

Missed last years show at Staples thanks to a KCET ticket mishap. We donated to one of their pledge drives and we were promised tickets to the show but they ran out last minute. Dont get me wrong, we still love KCET but it was a real downer when we weren't able to attend!

I should win because when I was little a t-rex ate my grandfather. Right in front of me. It was terrifying. My shrink thinks I need to confront this memory head on and well - this seems to be the only way to do so. So for the memory of my Pop-Pop and my mental health and stability, I should be awarded the tickets.

My half brother,, grendel10, was killed by dinosaurs. I must avenge his death.

Okay, not really, but I really love dinosaurs. Never forget!

Because I have a 9-year-old who misses her brother who's back at college.

She's got a real thing for dinosaurs and loves downtown (Angel's Flight, the Caltrans building, WDCH, etc). It would definitely cheer her up to spend an evening with some of her favs.

Thanks for the consideration.

Unfortunately, I don't have a kid or husband who loves dinosaurs. But Sept 9th is my birthday, and with no one to spend it with--what better way to celebrate, than spend some quality time with my ancestors?

Chris Tran on September 01, 2010, at 03:37PM – #23

I eat dino eggs @ breakfast and poo diamonds yayuh

I have been enthusiastically teaching with LAUSD for more than 10 years now. The LA Times article about the value-added measure of LAUSD teacher effectiveness has impacted me in a negative way as it tells people who have access online that I am a "least effective teacher," basing this solely on a standardized test that only covers Reading/Language Arts and Math. Hmm, I'm not happy with my ranking. But you know you succeed in "teaching" when former students come back after high school graduation to tell you that you made a difference in their life. If kids remember you as someone that cared enough to push them and made them see that there is more to the world out there and that they have potential to be what they want, then one test is not going to dictate what it means to be a good teacher. (but still disappointed many won't see it that way, oh well)

On a side note, this will be my first year teaching 2nd Grade and I will be covering a unit on fossils. My students will be learning about dinosaurs and I want to be able to share with them how indelible this experience with "Walking with Dinosaurs" was, as well as being at the Staples Center and LA Cafe. I want to encourage my students and their parents at Back-to-School Night to drive outside of their neighborhood and explore all of the Downtown LA attractions and eateries such as the Staples Center and LA Cafe so they have a deeper appreciation for what DTLA has to offer.

I should win because I am here at work and read this contest in the paper and got super excited. I'm in the bathroom faking being constipated so that I can try and win this for my son. I am a single mom still fighting for my child support, so the luxury of these types of things don't happen for my son and me. I would love to surprise him and see his face if we get to go. He loves dinosaurs and even has the little figures from his birthday. I pray we please get this opportunity, but if not I hope the winner truly enjoys this experience.

my best friend has an 8-year-old son whom i've known and loved since he was conceived. he lives in sherman oaks and i live in DTLA, and we rarely see each other anymore. we recently had an upsetting episode for the first time ever -- he acted out against me, and i didn't let him get away with it, and i've been looking for something he and i could do together to heal our little rift. if we could take a walk with the dinosaurs, i do believe all would be forgiven.

Land of the Lost was my favorite movie growing up! I used to hum the theme song on my way to school. I wanted to be Holly. In addition to that, my boyfriend has a 6 year old son that is amazed by dinosaurs and I, being dad's new girlfriend, need an "in" to woo this kid...break the ice age, if you will.

my 6 year old daughter has read a dozen dinosaur books and can list dinosaurs for you all afternoon, to cut down this process a little i usually ask for her to limit her list and descriptions to either herbivores or carnivores which she will gladly do. I have to trust that she is right since she knows far more about dinosaurs than i ever will but since she and her friends cant go alone i will be the less deserving member of our very grateful free ticket winning duo.
