Serial Burglar LAPD

Surveillance footage of this robbery was released in June as LAPD sought the culprit behind the crime spree.

After a five-month spree of break-ins, it was a return to the scene of an earlier crime that got David Wiggins arrested yesterday in the Flower District.

Wiggins, 51, was arrested in front of Orchard to Orchard floral shop, a business that he is accused of robbing twice in the past three months. Four hours after the second break-in, police stopped Wiggins based on a match with the suspect's description and found him wearing a backpack with a crowbar in it and tennis shoes that matched the print left when the store's back door was kicked in.

“When officers booked Wiggins, they noticed he had chemically treated his hands to remove his finger and palm prints," noted Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of Central Detective Division.

Video surveillance links Wiggins to nine break-ins in October, one in August and five in June. Police had released video of the June break-ins, hoping that the public could help in identifying the culprit.

Wiggins was booked for commercial burglary and bail was set at $20,000. He has 12 prior felony convictions for narcotics, burglary and vandalism.

"Wiggins made me a believer in the adage, ‘the crook always returns to the scene of the crime’,” Lt. Vernon added.
