An LAPD helicopter lands at the Hooper Memorial Heliport in 2008.

For four hours on Thursday, a rooftop next to Union Station will be home to one of the world's busiest airports.

Over 200 aircraft are expected to fly in and out of LAPD's Hooper Memorial Heliport between 10:30am and 2:30pm for the department's 27th annual Chili Fly-in, an event designed to give law enforcement airborne staff a chance to meet and say "thank you" to Southern California's air traffic control personnel.

“Air traffic controllers must regularly interact with public safety aviators who frequently engage in non-traditional flights, such as vehicle pursuits, surveillance operations and other tactical operations,” explains an LAPD press release about the event. “Before the Chili Fly-in, air traffic controllers and police aviators rarely, if ever, met face to face.”

Aircraft movements are scheduled to occur in one minute intervals throughout the event. Located on the roof of the Piper Technical Center, the heliport has been the home of LAPD’s Air Support Division since 1983.
