Downtown residents Eva Mah and Max watch on as dogs work up a thirst at the Arts District Dog Park.

It takes a dog park, to paraphrase an old adage.

The Arts District Dog Park, which opened in September through the efforts of local property owners, residents, and businesses, is again pulling together neighborhood resources to install a water fountain to help people keep their pets hydrated while playing.

Mr. Speedy Plumbing, located across the street from the dog park at 4th and Molino, will be providing an estimated $1500 worth of installation and piping for free. Councilman Jose Huizar's office has offered additional support, including covering costs of the fountain itself.

Sharon Tomlin, head of the dog park committee for the Los Angeles River Artist and Business (LARABA), adds that LAPD senior lead officer Jack Richter, who was instrumental in creating the park, "brings prisoners over from the jail to clean the park. Hopefully they will dig the drainage pit for the drinking fountain."

Tomlin, who is coordinating the project, is currently seeking bids for the fountain itself, which she estimates to cost less than $1000 for a basic unit and which will be placed inside the park away from the main gate. She says the Department of Water and Power will be visiting the dog park on Thursday to determine if the fountain will draw its water from a main line or a nearby fire hydrant.

A Halloween fundraiser for the dog park raised $1700 to help cover the park's estimated $5000 operating budget.

LARABA is also seeking proposals for permanent artwork in the dog park. The Arts District Healing Center is providing a $3000 grant for the project. The deadline for applications is January 3rd. More information can be found online or by contacting
