What Are Downtown's Most Important Beats?

I've spent a bunch of time interviewing potential editors for blogdowntown this week, a process that meant I spent a lot of time discussing our goals and editorial direction for the website and paper.

One of the things that I discussed with those candidates was an article that Robert Niles recently wrote for Online Journalism Review talking about the five beats that he believes are most important for a local newspaper or website.

In order of importance, Niles listed:

  1. Food
  2. Education
  3. Labor (working, not just unions)
  4. Business
  5. Faith

I highly recommend reading Niles' articles for the reasoning he gives to each item.

The list served as an interesting discussion starter in the interviews, and I thought it was worth mentioning here on a weekend as well.

I'd be interested to hear what readers think are the most important beats for Downtown Los Angeles, as well as how well they are currently being covered.
