Painter and sculptor Robert Reynolds is the featured artist for the Arts District Winterfest 2010, an 8 day community event that combines fine art with holiday craft sales. It opens with two nights of mingling and music.

Winterfest 2010 is the Arts District’s version of the eight days of Christmas. It opens tonight with a customary holiday party with full bar and live music. True to the neighborhood's tradition, the party will last two days.

Tonight's opening night will also be a chance for the Los Angeles River Artists and Business Association (LARABA) and the City of L.A. to acknowledge LAPD Senior Lead Officer Jack Richter and former LARABA President John Saslow for carving out the Downtown Arts District Dog Park.

It leads an eight day exhibition featuring works by painter/sculptors Robert Reynolds and Richard Godfrey, plus wheat-paste walls by Hold Up Art, the new and prolific street-art gallery in Little Tokyo.

Local artists are also scheduled to participate, including Mark Walsh, who will be debuting new sculpture, and a return visit from former Arts District artist-in-residence Tatiana Von Der Schulenburg.

They join local artisans selling handcrafted jewelry and displaying furniture. “Art will be priced to sell for the holidays,” says Shaun Thyne of Thyne Design.

“We were considering a modest winter event of some sort when we were offered an unexpected grant from Warner Brothers,” says Jonathan Jerald, board member of both LARABA and LADAD, the two community groups heading the event. “As it happened, the warehouse space at 833 E. 3rd was providentially available in December. So, things just sort of fell together."

“Also, we wanted to give a boost to Richard Godfrey, still recovering from sever brain trauma he suffered in a fall early this year,” adds Jerald.

Richter and Saslow will be honored this evening (Friday) around 8pm. That will be followed by a 10pm performance by alt-country indie singer Tawny Ellis. Bay Area alternative rock trio Kaura will perform Saturday evening at 10pm. Both evenings will also screen experimental films by Padua Playwright’s Guy Zimmerman.

Winterfest exhibitions will continue through December 18.

Arts District Winterfest / Opening party Fri Dec 10 and Sat Dec 11 (No Cover) / Exhibitions are open for the public on Saturday (and the rest of the run) from 2pm to 8pm / Winterfest Warehouse /833 E. 3rd St
