Downtown residents may not know Joe Lumer, but they certainly know his parking lots.

The head of Joe's Auto Park and CEO of parent company L&R Investments has died at 62 according to a note sent out by the company today and posted at LA Observed.

L&R is one of Downtown's largest landowners, despite having sold off many properties for development in recent years. The most noteworthy of those sales was a 2006 transaction in which the company sold three buildings and a parking lot — comprising most of the block bounded by Spring, 6th, Main and 7th — to developer Barry Shy for $75 million. Today those buildings are SB Tower, SB Spring and SB Main.

According to the report, Lumer was vacationing in Argentina when he passed away suddenly. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday.

Update (Monday): The L.A. Times on Saturday ran a nice obituary about Lumer's death that included a focus on his work as a Holocaust researcher and author.

The piece also notes that it was actually Joe Lumer's uncle who was the namesake for Joe's Auto Parks.
