blogdowntown Turns Six

On January 13, 2005, I introduced as a place to "hold all the Downtown-related content I had previously been writing" on my personal blog.

We've come a long way since then.

The site celebrated its sixth birthday this afternoon with a redesign—though not one that applied particularly smoothly—and a few administrative changes.

The most visible of those changes is that you must now log in to comment.

Comments have always been a double-edged sword, and when things got dicey it was typically the "Guest" creating the most trouble.

I've resisted making this change, not wanting to make it difficult for readers to leave a quick comment. In 2010, there were 8,598 comments left on the site. Logged in readers vs guests were split just about 50/50, with the needle tilted just slightly toward the guests.

The goal is still to make it easy to comment, but just to require that you make at least a token attempt to identify yourself in doing so. We'll see how it goes.

Editor's Note: This story was intended to be published mid-afternoon, when we launched the new design. Some unexpected bugs kept me scrambling for the rest of the evening, so this story's just sneaking in under the wire to avoid having to wish ourselves a belated birthday.
