Shoppers check out the Valentine's Day selection at shops near the corner of 8th and San Pedro.

Still need that last-minute minute floral arrangement to turn your Valentine's Day plans from good to great? A walk around Downtown's Flower District this morning showed plenty of blooms still left to choose from, and plenty of shoppers out to pick from them.

"Right now we're slammed," said Mark Chatoff, owner of the California Flower Mall, mid-morning on Monday.

Sales coming into Valentine's Day have been slightly lower than those of last year, and Chatoff said that cheaper roses are proving popular. "The general mood is that the consumer is looking to save money," he noted.

The Flower District action is centered around 8th and Wall and 8th and San Julian, with plenty of options available in the $10 to $30 range.

Last-minute shoppers even end up saving money. Roses that started the weekend at $35 - $40 are already going for $20, Chatoff said.

Those prices will go down even further as the day goes on. "If they have inventory, they want to move it," Chatoff said. "Sometimes waiting until the last minute, in this particular case, does work in your favor."
