Shell Gas Prices Eric Richardson / blogdowntown

Gas prices at the Olympic and Grand Shell station on Tuesday afternoon. By Monday morning, prices were up four cents for each grade.

The average price of gas in Los Angeles is $3.785 today according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report, up 1.2 cents from Tuesday and more than 20 cents in the last week.

Take a look at prices Downtown, though, and you'll find that the central city's stations are well ahead of the curve. Regular unleaded at the Olympic and Grand Shell station was $4.099 this morning, up four cents from Tuesday. On the north end of Downtown, the Chevron next to Union Station was charging an eye-popping $4.299 last night when the latest user report was sent in to GasBuddy.com.

This isn't new behavior for either station. Both are consistently high, though the Shell doesn't really even belong in the Chevron's league when it comes to disconnect from market prices.

The price of doing business in Downtown, or just businesses able to make an extra buck off those not willing to drive an extra mile?
