Downtown Culture: Fiesta Broadway and Opera Both Classic and Modern

The Library Store has an array of gifts for Mother's Day, including books signed by authors appearing at ALOUD. The Library Foundation oversee the store and lecture series on behalf of the Los Angeles Public Library.

In case you-know-who is in town, it is Mother's Day weekend so you may want to stop by the Flower District before taking your mom to your new favorite dining place or coffee house. Or just call and let her know what you are doing this weekend.

LA Opera Free Lunchtime Recital: LA Opera is offering a series of free lunchtime performances around the city to mark its 25th Anniversary. This week, the opera's repertoire is shared with Downtowners in the Eva and Marc Stern Grand Hall of the Dorothy Chandler. Fri May 6 1pm / Dorothy Chandler Pavilion / 135 N. Grand

Dance Downtown: It is cumbia night at Active Arts at the Music Center and the public is invited to join in or take some quick lessons on “how to dance and shake it, move it and groove it.” Free lessons for beginners will be held throughout the evening. Mark Morris Dance Group’s 30th anniversary performance tour brings opera and dance together in the revived 1988 piece "L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato." The 22nd Annual Fiesta Broadway will be held on Mother’s Day and organizer All Access Entertainment expects a half a million people to converge on 24 blocks in Downtown. Temporary street closures are slated to shut down Broadway between 1st and 5th Streets, and 1st Street between Hill and Main Streets. Street closures will begin at midnight on Saturday evening, May 7th, and roads will remain closed until 6am on Monday, May 9. Fiesta Broadway / 11am to 6pm / Broadway
