One of the winners of Metro's first Developer Challenge could make life easier for Downtowners trying to travel smart with the transit agency's newly-released NextBus integration.

Smart Ride, a free iPhone app by San Francisco-based CodeMass, pulls in the NextBus data to offer easier access to arrival times by stop or by bus line. The app won $1,500 in the "Next Bus Mobile App" category.

Knowing exactly when the next buses are set to arrive can make a big difference in a neighborhood like Downtown, where multiple lines often travel to the same destination. For instance, a rider wanting to reach the Gold Line from Indie Desk at 816 S. Broadway, could catch the 730, 740, 745, 30 or 733, but the lines are split between three different stops around the block.

Metro launched its Developer Challenge earlier this year to encourage developers to integrate its transit data into their applications.
