Opened in 1977 as the New Otani, the 340-room Kyoto Grand will become a DoubleTree in Spring of 2012.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Little Tokyo's Kyoto Grand Hotel will officially become a DoubleTree in the Spring of 2012, completing plans first put in motion during the structure's recent bankruptcy case.
According to a press release put out on Tuesday, renovation work on the 430-room hotel should start in the coming weeks.
Opened in 1977 as the New Otani, the hotel had struggled to compete in recent years. A report filed in the bankruptcy case showed a 2009 occupancy and average room rate of 51.5% and $104.82, well below the Downtown averages for the year, which were 61.8% and $133.70.
While a DoubleTree website at one point showed the hotel as the "Kyoto Grand Downtown Los Angeles - a Doubletree hotel," Tuesday's release drops the Kyoto Grand name and instead calls the structure the "DoubleTree by Hilton Los Angeles Downtown."
The hotel was recently sold for $45 million to UBS Realty. Rim Hospitality of Newport Beach will manage the structure.

While I think the Doubletree and Hilton names will be good for reservations, they need to remember that they are in Little Tokyo.
