Exhibition Highlights Ideas for Future of the Fashion District

These ten boards from focus on aspirations that the Fashion District should have as it looks forward.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — The Fashion Your District project kicked off with a series of community workshops this January, soliciting ideas on what should go into a plan for the future of Downtown's 100-block Fashion District.
Now that the project is roughly two-thirds complete, the Community Redevelopment Agency and environmental firm AECOM have set up shop in an empty retail space to show off the ideas they've heard and get a feel for how property owners, residents and shoppers feel about their vision for the neighborhood.
The Ideas Exhibition opened yesterday evening at 1112 S. San Julian, and this afternoon the boards were posted to Facebook for those who can't make it in person to comment.
At last night's kickoff, representatives from both sides of the project team emphasized that they wanted to focus the $1 million study on ideas that had a good chance of implementation, ending up with action items and not just a document to file away as has been the case with so many Downtown plans.
Plans focus on creating a more pedestrian space that highlights the fashion and flowers the district is built around. Evening uses are encouraged, and the need for connections to neighboring districts is highlighted.
The exhibition is open 10am to 8pm through Saturday, and events are scheduled for this evening at 6:30pm and for 10:30am on both Friday and Saturday. More information can be found at the Fashion Your District website.

Call it what you want, to a native Angeleno, it is and always will be the Garment District. When is the last time you saw "fashion" for sale in this district?

@Vero Queero: This morning. Saw it this morning. With my own eyes.

@Vero Queero: Everyone in DT calls in the Fashion District, names change, not a big deal, but that's besides the point.
I would like to see more information about how this going to be funded. What are the business incentives to build and innovate here?

@ Vero Queero: if you work "in the industry" in LA your say you work in the "garment industry"- but, i would say this area of DTLA has succeeded in getting everyone to call this place the Fashion District.
