A 53-year-old man died Wednesday evening after a fatal stabbing at 7th and Ceres. Police report that the man staggered into the C&C Market at 6:30pm, asked the clerk to call 9-1-1, and then collapsed on the floor.

"Witnesses told detectives that about five Black men attacked and beat the victim on the sidewalk near 7th Street and Ceres Street," said Lt. Jim Gavin, a detective watch commander for the Central Detective Division. "We'd like anyone with any information to call us."

Police described the victim as Hispanic, but did not immediately release his name. Paramedics transported him to the hospital where he died a short time later.

The murder is the 11th in 2011 for LAPD's Central area, which covers most of Downtown. That number includes two incidents that took place in 2010 and were later reclassified. Overall violent crime is up five percent in 2011, though it is still six percent below 2009 levels.

Anyone with information is asked to report tips the Central Homicide Unit, at 213-972-1254. Anonymous tips can be called into Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477), or by texting 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone. All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.”

the early release program was a critically shortsighted decision that will only continue to result in blood on the streets and further hinder those living on Skid Row and in our most vulnerable communities.

I was one of many victims down here in Skid Row, by the grace of God I'm still here, I had a 7.5 cm laceration to the neck and an open wound in my left cheek, after violently attacked by 5 individuals, 3 of them in their late teens, all I have to say is if occupy L.A. and all these none sense protests are going on all cops don't cover time frames, and important corners where the danger seems to always lurk... I've lived in 7th and Central 23 years and witnessed many murders up and down these streets, and cops don't seem to mind to them; to them their world is only a time card and pilling up of new murder cases. Ridiculous. Bare arms my people!!!
