Roxy's Doggy Day Care to relocate to Arts District; loft-imprisoned dogs rejoice!

The Arts District will soon be home to Roxy's Doggy Day Care and Boarding, set to open March 17th with a pet adoption and St. Patrick’s Day doggy costume competition.

Moving from 7th street, owner Kathleen Pennington hopes to offer downtown dogs who are cramped up in their lofts, the opportunity to run around and be, well, dogs in their new 2,000 sq. ft. location.

“It’s a friendlier location,” Pennington said. “The Arts District is an upcoming little pocket of L.A.”

On average, Pennington and a helper take care of 10 to 12 dogs a day, but she doesn’t want that number to increase to over 25 because she wants to give every dog in her shop the attention they deserve.

“I can honestly say I have a relationship with every single dog that walks in the door,” Pennington added.

For $28 a day, dogs can expect a personal 10 to 15-minute walk in the morning, playtime with other pooches, a 20-minute walk in the park and snack and movie time, where pups will get to mellow out and watch canine classics such as “101 Dalmatians” and “All Dogs Go To Heaven.”

Dogs can be left overnight and owners are encouraged to leave their pet’s food and bed at the day care so the pooches feel at-home and comfortable. Pennington also made it clear that someone is always there with the dogs.

Also being offered is dog grooming, two to three times a week by mobile service, Me So Groomie. Man’s best friend will have the choice of the “The Essentials,” which includes everything but a full coat cut, “The Whole Shebang,” which includes complete grooming for long hair dogs, and “The In-Between,” which is ideal for pets who are between complete grooming appointments.

Pennington has a long history working with animals, most notably as a vet technician for several years before opening up her day care.

“It blends well to have someone with medical knowledge,” Pennington said. “I’ve always had a great love of animals.”

Roxy's Doggy Day Care and Boarding is located at 1101 E 5th street.
