Custom denim store opens in Historic Core; not cheap, but that hasn't stopped sales

Den.m new custom jeans workshop opened on 7th Street in the Historic Core last week.

Nuzzled on 7th Street in Downtown's Historic Core, Den.m makes jeans one pair at a time to fit customer's bodies and styles. Customization is the "big thing" right now, Yip noted, saying that nowadays people love to make their own eyewear, tshirts and more -- by opening a custom jeans store they can cater to that demand.

"We wanted to bring back the American-made jeans to the U.S.," explained Derek Yip, one of the three partners behind the custom denim workshop, Den.m Bar, that opened last week.

What do hand-selected, personally crafted jeans cost? They're not cheap. They start at $229, Yip said. From there, prices increase further depending on how crazy you go with the jean's details and specifications.

If you've spent much time in a Nordstrom or Macy's lately, $200 jeans may seem reasonable -- especially for a pair made specifically for your body.

And at least 40 Downtowners seem to think so. Den.m had to extend their turnaround time for a single pair of jeans to seven to 10 days, in order to accommodate the 40 orders they've received over the last week. The number is more than they can currently process, Yip said, and their putting all future orders on hold until they get through this first batch.

According to the store's website, the jean materials are sourced from denim mills in the U.S., Japan, and Europe. And here's a unique detail: each pair of jeans come with free repairs for five years.

All the denim used is raw, which means it will change its appearance and shrink about one size after washing.

Here's how the process works: Customers set up an appointment with a Den.m tailor and pick the cut (skinny, slim tapered, etc), color and type of denim. Then comes the selection of bells and whistles: zippers, buttons, color of thread and more.

Each individual is measured, pants are marked and seamstresses put it all together. The Den.m website states that each pair of jeans can be made up of as many as 19 different pieces.

Den.m Bar is located at 111 West 7th St. between Spring and Main streets. The store is open Wednesday through Friday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and Saturdays 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Sunday and Monday they're open by appointment only.
