The L.A. Comedy Shorts Film Festival began last night at the Downtown Independent theater in Los Angeles. The self-proclaimed "largest comedy film festival in the U.S." is a four-day event including screenings, industry panels, celebrity sightings and more.

According to the festival's website, previous celebrity participants in the event have included Mark Hamill, Jane Lynch, Adam Carolla, Bob Odenkirk, Bobcat Goldthwait, and others.

Actors and comedians, Gary Anthony Williams and Jeannie Roshar, co-founded the event which is now in its fourth year.

The festival is "dedicated to introducing the newest and hottest comedic talent to the industry, and helping them make the connections they need to take their careers to the next level,"the website states.

"I guarantee you, you're going to laugh," Williams told the Los Angeles Times, "or I'm going to let you punch me in the throat. One or the other. It's a punch-in-the-throat guarantee I'm offering."

If the titles of the festival segments are any indication of the quality of the pieces, no punches will be necessary. Highlights include Friday night's film block called, "Nostra-damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta," and Sunday's panel, "Cockroaches, Twinkies and New Media: They're Here To Stay."

The festival begins between 9 and 10 a.m. all weekend, with events scattered throughout the day and parties DTLA at night.

One of the festival's major sponsors is Will Ferrell and Judd Apatow's "funny or die" -- the video-heavy website full of Ferrell, pop culture satire and top-tier actors doing comedy.

The Downtown Independent is located at 251 S. Main Street
