The E3 expo is attracted to draw about 50,000 attendees to downtown L.A.

The three-day computer and video game conference returns to Downtown L.A. this week to debut new gaming products, technologies and innovations for a large audience of industry members.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) isn't a public event, but brings together "leading computer and video game companies, business partners, media and industry analysts" from more than 100 countries, according to the event's website.

The entire 720,000-square-foot convention center will be taken over by the expo, the Los Angeles Downtown News reports, with more than 50,000 attendees anticipated this year. The conference is also expected to have a huge financial impact on Downtown by stimulating $40 million in spending over the course of three days, Michael Krouse, senior vice president of sales for the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board told the Downtown paper.

Highlights for this year's conference include Nintendo's Wii U GamePad, a console which was introduced at last year's show but will be explored further this week in preparation for its expected fall launch. Sequels in the "Halo" and "Call of Duty" game series will also be debuted at the event.

Before this year's E3 has even begun, organizers are discussing plans for next year's event. The convention may be relocated in 2013 if issues surrounding the construction of Farmers Field and the redesigned convention center are not resolved "imminently," Michael Gallagher, president of the Entertainment Software Assn. told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of E3's organizers are concerned about easily accessing the center during construction and having enough floor space to accommodate their expansive crowd, according to the L.A. Times.

While there are pre- and post- convention events and announcements, the official E3 expo takes place Tuesday through Thursday.
