USC's Hybrid High School is set to open Sept. 4 in Downtown.

USC is opening a charter high school in Downtown this coming fall that will serve L.A. students who are deemed at risk of dropping out.

Classes will begin on Sept. 4 at the 19,000-square foot school, but before then, Hybrid High School is inviting soon-to-be ninth graders to orientation sessions held every other week until the end of July, according to a statement from the school.

Developed by the USC Rossier School of Education, Hybrid High plans to enroll 150 ninth graders in its first year, eventually growing its student body to 650 students in four years.

Development of the school is taking place over the summer and will include four large "learning labs", two project rooms, several spaces for small student groups to gather, a courtyard and an administrative suite.

The school prides itself on its accessibility to the students; it's open 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Students will receive a mix of digital coursework and personalized, face-to-face instruction.

The average high school dropout rate in urban centers across the nation is nearly 50 percent, according to a statement from Hybrid High, and only 56 percent of ninth graders attending L.A. Unified School District finish high school in four years.

Many of these students end up dropping out because they have other obligations -- mostly to full or part-time jobs and taking care of family members.

The new DTLA school is therefore setting a goal of graduating 100 percent of its students and preparing them for the workplace or college.

Admission to the high school is open to any student in California, according to their website. Orientation sessions are located on the USC campus at Waite Phillips Hall, room 403, and begins at 5:30 pm on June 12, June 26, July 10 and July 24.

USC Hybrid High School will open at 350 S. Figueroa St.
