Empty bus falls from 5th Street overpass

A bus lies on a collector road near the 110 Freeway after it flipped off a 5th Street overpass early Friday morning, Sept. 14, 2012.

A passenger-less Montebello Transit bus overturned from a 5th Street overpass around 8 a.m. Friday morning and fell to the collector road near the 110 freeway below.

There were no major injuries to the driver or any pedestrians in the accident where the brakes somehow disengaged, explained L.A. County Fire Department spokesman Cecil Manresa.

Montebello Transit did not immediately return our calls, so we asked Metro what they thought of this morning's spill.

"In 22 years I've never experienced something like that," Metro Media Relations Director Marc Littman said, trying to remember when an unmanned bus flipped over.

Littman did recall one time when an operator parked a bus but didn't properly set the brakes.

"It ran down the hill hit a convenience store," Littman remembered.
