LA Public Library releases new ALOUD line-up; 'The Dude' Jeff Bridges will abide
Downtown's Central Library hosts most of the ALOUD events -- this year's line-up includes Father Gregory Boyle and actor Jeff Bridges.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — The L.A. Public Library has released their schedule for its upcoming series of ALOUD events -- which cover topics ranging from Cold War architecture to reporting in Haiti, and a conversation with actor Jeff Bridges about his new book.
According to a statement from the Library Foundation of Los Angeles which puts on the series, ALOUD "engages Angelenos in critical civic and cultural discourse, seeking to inspire lifelong learning and exploring." There have been more than 1,000 ALOUD events in the program's almost 20-year history, which includes panels, discussions and performances that highlight "current events and culturally relevant and intellectually engaging topics."
Most of the ALOUD events takes place at the Mark Taper Auditorium in the Downtown library. They are free to attend and all you need to do is reserve your spot by signing up online. Select programs, including the L.A. Grand Ensemble concert and the Jeff Bridges book event, cost $15 to $25 per ticket.
Other highlights from the upcoming winter series include a conversation with filmmaker Diego Luna, whose extensive acting and producing career include "Y Tu Mamá También," "Sin Nombre" and "Milk." On January 29, he'll be speaking about a new film he's made about Cesar Chavez.
Downtown's own Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, is part of an event on December 10 with author Anne Lamott's about her new book called "Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers."
KPCC's Patt Morrison will be leading a discussion in February with lieutenant govoner of California and former mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom, about government in the digital age. This program, along with the Diego Luna event and about five others throughout the series are already sold-out. The library will offer standby spots for these programs on a first-come, first-serve basis, an hour before each event begins.
