Grilled cheese sandwiches abound this month in the form of free snacks and all-out festivals.

Not for the faint of heart or lactose intolerant, April is Grilled Cheese Month which means grilled cheese recipes, freebies and competitions galore. Lucky for you, many of these promotions take place in Downtown.

Chain restaurant The Melt is giving out 10,000 free sandwiches in honor of the gooey holiday as long as you sign up for one online by April 12. Just visit their website and get your coupon code, then go cash it in at their Figat7th location.

Right on the other side of the freeway from DTLA, the Grilled Cheese Invitational will take place on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Los Angeles Center Studios.

This will be 11th year for the competition and will pit more than 200 grilled cheese aficionados against each other. While they battle for dairy dominance, gourmet grilled cheese vendors and micro-breweries will be selling snacks throughout the event. Pre-sale tickets are $12, day-of tickets cost $15.

But Grilled Cheese Month isn't all about eating — it's also about cooking, and many publications are spreading the gospel of making good grilled cheese. CNN's Eatocracy tips for a perfectly melted sandwich include using butter instead of oil, choosing a sharp cheese and adding a dash of black pepper.

The Los Angeles Times celebrated the cheesy month last year by selecting 12 sandwich recipes from their test kitchen. Combinations include the Smokey Sweet which is smoked cheddar cheese, apple butter and rosemary bread.
