Jaywalking Tickets Eric Richardson

Walking over to Spring after getting off the 81 over at 7th and Hill I saw this LAPD officer with his cycle parked and lights on. He was standing on the corner of 7th and Broadway with his ticket book out. Turns out he was writing jaywalking tickets for people who entered the crosswalk after the hand had turned red. I know that bad ped behaviour slows up traffic, but it seems a little odd to randomly show up and start giving out tickets. In the mornings, standing at 6th and Hill, I see businessmen cross the street mid-block with impunity. A block later at 7th and Spring I saw a guy cross halfway against the light, wait for an MTA bus to pass, then finish his crossing.

That said, you really should notice an LAPD officer standing next to his cycle with the flashers on.

i wish i had read your entry sooner. i've been cited this morning for crossing the street as soon as the hand started flashing. i've been living in downtown for the past couple of years and this is the first time i'm learning you cannot step off the curb once the 'don't walk' signal lights up. am i the only one who does this or did not know of this? well i am the idiot for ignoring the sight of not one, but two! stationed motorcycle cops on the corner. argh.
