Live at Pershing Square

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Pershing Square I’m hanging out at Pershing Square for the media event to both launch the WIFI here and unveil the city’s WIFI plan. Curt Gibbs from the CRA took the photo of me getting my connection all set up. Connectivity is good and fast. I’ll be updating this post over the next hour or so as the event goes on.

(8:59): Jan spoke about how proud she is that CD9 now has this access, and how she’s working to get it installed other places in her district. I fully encourage Council members to fight over who gets the most wifi in their district.

John Schafer, one of the CRA commissioners, spoke next. The CRA did the RFP and contract for the WIFI.

(9:03): I love this part. They’re using the WIFI to send the report to the Mayor.

(9:04): Mark Wolf, Director of E-Government is up. He has Doane Liu, Deputy Mayor, on the phone. Via Mark holding his cell phone up to the mic, he’s confirming that the Mayor just got the report.

Wi-Fi Hot Zones are growing at super speeds and this is a great example of the technology.

It's summer again and I would like to know what is in store at Pershing Square for our community. It is rumored that Pershing Park has over two million in it's account. When are they going to spend that money on the community? Most cities with performance parks like Pershing put on great free concerts, art shows and movies for their city all summer long. I walk my dog at Pershing every day and all I see on a regular basis is male prostitution and the homeless. Who has their hands on the money and why won't they spend it. It's time those of us who pay for the privlige of living close to the only "park" in downtown LA insist that the park be used for what it was intended. I notice there is no problem pimping out the park for filming. This park should be used for the community not just a cash cow.

Fred: I'll put up a better preview as we get closer, but on May 5th the DLANC Parks and Open Space committee will be meeting at Pershing Square and that park will be the main topic on the agenda.
