So, anyone know what the really funny looking treehouse is over at City Hall East? I was biking down 1st yesterday headed to the Little Tokyo Office Depot when this structure caught my attention enough to pull off the street and take a picture.

Knowing this town, I’m going to have to guess that this has something to do with filming. There was no signage anywhere around, just a fence with some green privacy screen.

I still just can’t quite figure out what you’d need to do up there for long enough to actually raise a whole construction trailer-ish building.

Update (2:30pm) As usual, Tim Quinn’s in the know. In the comments he posts that it’s part of a MOCA display. That release says you can actually climb up there, but I’m not sure if that’s only during certain times. I’m headed up to City Hall right now; I’ll poke around and see what I can find out.

Specially made for the exhibition, Tatsurou Bashi’s Kariforunia (2005) changes the way visitors perceive the edifices they encounter everyday. The work consists of a constructed living room, supported by a scaffolding structure, situated 30 feet above the ground around the Los Angeles City Hall flagpole bearing the California state flag. Visitors can access the room by climbing a secured staircase where they will see the flag, which previously waved high above the heads of busy pedestrians in downtown Los Angeles, re-positioned at eye level.
