Spring Street Finally a Real One Way

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — As of yesterday afternoon the east side of Spring Street now has parking for the first time in thirty years. The yellow lines are gone and the new spots have been striped. No meters yet, but they’ll be here by the official project opening date next Sunday.

One thing that I’m still working on is getting the periodic “No Parking 2am - 5am Nightly” signs removed. Sometimes they’re up, sometimes they’re not, and there are going to be some angry people if tickets are given out based on signage inconsistant to a block. The east side of Spring, though, definitely doesn’t have the signs and from just speaking to DOT I was told that regardless of what signs the west side of the street may have if there’s nothing on the east side it’s fair game.

Interesting note, the intersection of Spring & 6th now has two one-way signs mounted to the post. One pointing traffic South, and another pointing North. Hopefully somebody realizes this and corrects it soon.

On Saturday I was riding a Foothill bus and saw their notice of making route changes because of “the closure of the Spring Street bus lanes north of 1st Street”. In fact the lanes are only closed South of 1st Street. The agency has been contacted in re their mistake.

Good work Dana. That’s the real danger in situations like this: bad or missing information. Not only are the buses still there north on Spring from 1st, but the lights got (or are getting) changed to add extra phases into the signals.

I went over to Spring Street yesterday to see what was going on at about 4:00 p.m. There were a few confused souls waiting for buses on Spring so I informed them that buses were no longer coming there. I directed them to the new routes on Main or Hill. I probably could have stood there all day and done this, but I only did it for about five minutes. Hope that helped.

For those who exalted at this action, you may want to savor the flavor since it may be the last gasp of the LADOT 1950s traffic engineer culture: the new GM at LADOT has ousted the Asst. GM who championed this change.

A month or so ago I met the new GM and told her she faced an organization that has often been difficult to deal with and is dominated by outdated auto-oriented priorities. She responbded she knew she faced challenges. This latest action (despite the squakes Mr. Asst. GM made when let go) proves she is sincere in her desire to be more community oriented and implement new urbanist ideas.

This should be interesting.

Our building received surveys to fill on what lines are used, or changes could be applied. I’m going to propose that this Main street/Spring street line is extended until 9pm on Art Walk nights.

They should have signs up for those who wait. Of course they may never be read. Not even signs/flyers in the busses would work. The drivers should announce it once in a while as they call out streets.
