I gave a really cursory account of Thursday’s accident at the Angelique Cafe, but over at The Cutter Files you can find an eyewitness report on what took place. The car that hit the eatery blew a tire, sending it careening into the building and one of its employees.

i reach the patio just in time to see a grey pontiac cutlass heading north on main blow a tire, skid out of control, jump the main street side curb at about 20 miles per hour, glance off of a street light, and plow through the angelique cafe employee who not a second before was standing just ten feet from me, minding his own business stacking chairs and probably thinking about how he was going to spend the rest of his day.

i swear to God - he was there, and then he was gone. it was all over in about three seconds.

Cutter ends up his report by asking Downtowners to show some support to Angelique after what obviously was a traumatic experience to those working.

Update (Thursday): I just posted an update on the status of the injured employee.

Eric, I’m wondering if this is not a joint public safety and transportation/public works issue, requesting pedestrian protection from vehicles at this unique intersection and area focal point?

Thanks for the information – do you have any information about Jim? Does he have health insurance? (Lots of waiters don’t.) Wondering if LA bloggers might want to set up donations.

The waiter wasn’t the only victim. There were three others eating who were badly hurt…AND the owner didnt even have the descency to come down and check on everyone. The outside patio should have some kind of protection around to ensure the safety of their customers. The driver (17 years old without insurance) was free to go!

that’s horrible. shannon, do you mean the new owner of angelique didn’t come down?

maybe we could get those "concrete cocks", the cement posts that protect pedestrians from cars?
