No Such Thing as Too Many Markets

Wednesday saw developer Mark Weinstein continued this week’s theme of ”breaking the bread,” welcoming a farmers market to his Santee Village complex. The new market brings Downtown’s total to six.

Weinstein, Councilmember Jan Perry and Jessica McLean (representing Jose Huizar’s office) posed with a large pretzel, pulling it apart once the berry-holding, suit-and-tie wearing crowd got ugly (Who says Downtown has lost it’s edge?).

BerriesThe market's selection of fruits, vegetables and flowers might seem more sparse than some of the more established markets, but organizers expect the event to grow. It gives Downtowners who can't attend the popular day markets a place to get produce, and it's that kind of evening activity that's needed for those who dare to stay Downtown after 5pm. As Santee Village resident Jaclyn Hallelb said, "It's great that it's walking distance."

The Fashion District Farmers Market will run every Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm. Each of Downtown's six markets can be found on this map.

Above, Jan Perry poses with a piece of giant pretzel. Right, Jaclyn Hallelb shows off the market's produce choices.
