Chapman Lobby Is Indeed Quite Marble-y

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — When plans were first announced for the conversion of the Chapman at 8th and Broadway, much was made of how the building’s lobby was so extensively decked in marble. At the time I was a bit skeptical that much of it would have survived the building’s intervening periods.

Now that the Chapman lobby has again returned to view, though, I can see that there is indeed quite a bit of marble looking to be in pretty good shape in there.

This sort of thing always makes you wonder what other unassuming Downtown buildings have treasures sitting hidden inside. While we’ve seen amazing restorations over the past few years, you know there have to be a few more gems waiting to get their chance to return to the spotlight.

They passed electric and plumbing inspections and are waiting for the big one (fire).

Yeah, I have pictures of the roof and can share later this evening. The roof is still pretty bare in terms of landscape, etc, but they have the hot tub installed (with glass walls surrounding), a fountain, and elevated tile (better to see in picture than describe).

My wife actually has a lot of personal history with this building. When she first came to L.A. as a little girl from Mexico, her mom worked in the building in garment manufacturing. She recalls a long-gone pizza joint. There was a toy store where she got her first real Barbie doll. She always remembered the lobby. She's very curious to see the new lobby.
