Today's Downtown Art Walk falls on Valentines Day and galleries are taking that theme to heart. With more exhibits beyond Gallery Row, an Art Walk DASH may not be enough. Art walk cab service anyone?

Off The Path, But Worth Noting: This morning Councilmember Jan Perry will unveil "Purple Heart," a large-scale mosaic mural crafted by residents of Skid Row working with the nonprofit org Piece by Piece. . —The opening will be held at 11am at the Southern (412 East 5th Street), an SRO dedicated to Vets. Piece by Piece's mission is to teach marketable skills, like creating high-quality works of mosaic art. . — SRO Executive Director and CEO, Anita Nelson writes in the release: "This mural, in symbol and in act, embraces the concept of selflessness and service and is a poignant homage to the one-in-four men and women who have served our country and now find themselves without house or home." — Continued Inside...

The “Flats” is the isolated Los Angeles neighborhood sitting between the eastside bluffs and the L.A. River. Take a look, via DotDotDash, at some history and hope found in the area culturally linked to Boyle Heights, and geographically related to the Arts District:

SITTING ALONG THE RIVER: While Boyle Heights was becoming the new homeland for immigrants in the early 20th Century, Molokan Russians fled the Bolshevik revolution and some settled in the Flats, providing a new workforce for the local lumberyards. Many built small homes and some are still standing today ..— The Russian rush changed the Flats turn of the century reputation of ‘worst slum” in the country..—Tenements once extended from the bluffs to across the river at Vignes and Aliso, where the Arts District is now located.

Thursday marks the debut of the Downtown Art Walk DASH, promising to whisk gallery goers from 2nd down Spring to 9th and back up to Main from 7pm to 9:45pm. Before we jump on to look at some galleries on the route, here's a look at a launch party held last night along with some odds and ends in a longer than usual DotDotDash for Tuesday, June 12.

TOKEN PARIS WATCH: With the slew of celebs moving or rumored to be moving into Downtown, we can add that Paris Hilton is Arts District adjacent––staying in a tower at Vignes and Alameda ..— Bordello was packed last night hosting New Angeles Monthly's launch party that had Executive Publisher Charles N. Gerencser welcoming everyone to the Eastside connection..— Cop Bar Memories: Commander Andy Smith was there as a guest and reminisced that when he turned sergeant, his promotion party was in the same place when it was a cop bar at a "small table in the corner."..—Boffo at Bordello Doing research on local movers and shakers was Daily Variety's Steve Chagollan who is leading V-scribes in a special section on the "renaissance" of Downtown. — Continued Inside...
