Welcome Back

I apologize for the rather too long outage this morning. A dirty little secret of mine is that blogdowntown runs out of my living room, and my building, Premiere Towers, lost power this morning at 7:30am. Service wasn’t restored until after noon, so in the interim blogdowntown was in the dark. It’s a nice testament to Downtown’s power stability...

Extra Reading: South Parks, a Mural and One-Way Streets

By Eric Richardson — March 11, 2008

South Park

Today wraps up my Curbed stint, so things should return back to a more normal flow here tomorrow. In the meantime, here are the three stories I posted over there today. While Downtown’s South Park neighborhood has all the hot development action, the real South Park has been minding its own business three miles south for almost 110 years. Oddly, I think...

Radio Hill Gardens

In all my rush today I never even got a chance to mention that today and tomorrow I’m doing some blogging over at Curbed LA. It’s a funny change of pace for me to put an eye to non-Downtown stories. Inevitably, though, all my interests roll back here and both stories I wrote today had a Downtown connection. First, I took on Radio Hill Gardens and...

Yahoo Maps Won't Let Arts vs Artists Die

By Eric Richardson — March 05, 2008

Yahoo Maps recently added neighborhood names to its displayed data. Here in Downtown, though, they made an old mistake, calling the Arts District the Artists District. It’s not exactly a new mistake, well past its first adventure in printing Artist District signs the city still has the name boldly emblazoned on maps around Downtown. You might be tempted...

We Have a Name, You Know

Update (9pm): So a different article up tonight, about the Regional connector, quotes me and links to blogdowntown. With an actual link. I guess you win some, you lose some. The Times today pushed a late afternoon story on Downtown, titling it ”L.A.’s upscale downtown delayed.” The piece talks about how the uncertainty in the market is leading...

Misplaced Your Pads?

Are these your pads?

If you’ve recently misplaced a set of Vaughn goalie pads I may have found them for you. You can go pick them up on Jackson street, where it deadends into the river. They look to be a little the worse for wear, so you may be better off just picking up some new equipment. One never knows the sort of things that await when you start wandering around Downtown...

Cherry 7-Up Comeback Looking Doubtful

Ashes and Snow

One of the images on the Bringing Back Broadway website shows a view that includes the Cameo Theatre and its rooftop ad. Those who have been around Downtown for a few years remember this as the site of a Cherry 7-Up ad that was promoting the coolness of pink for roughly two decades (pictured after the jump). The current billboard for the exhibit Ashes and Snow...

Celebrating the Triforium in Verse

Bloc Party

Losanjealous is looking for people to give some poetic love to the Triforium. Ryan opens it off with this… I play silly tunes A homeless man defecates Temple at Main Street. But it’s this contribution by first commenter yo that made me laugh: flickering lite brite musical cement rocket lighting up the void I’m strictly not poetic, so...

Take Some Time to Enjoy the Colors

It’s a given that many Downtowners may still be busy catching up from a long holiday break. Hopefully, a few took some time to watch this sunset over the skyline today. The clear air and lingering clouds created the perfect setting for an explosion of color. The Arts District provided the perfect venue to catch it all with a skyline foreground.

Commenting Issues; Fixed

By Eric Richardson — January 03, 2008

It appears that I broke commenting earlier this afternoon. Save those thoughts – we’ll have a fix within the hour as I get back to wifi. Update (5:10pm): Fixed. My fault. Resume commenting. For my next trick, I think I can actually recover failed comments from my error logs. Update (5:45pm): Five failed comments are now rescued. The 77 spam comments...
