Fire on Spring?

Oddly (or perhaps not) I had just noticed this morning that they were doing construction in the building. As I walked across Spring to catch my DASH I saw that they had backed a truck in a hole cut onto the 6th St. side of the building. I assumed they had been doing work inside and were using the truck to haul away debris. I first noticed the whole this weekend...

The LA Times today has a brief mention of the Downtown Living Open House. I promised a write-up earlier in the weekend and then got busy, so I’ll go ahead and wrap it up for you real quick now. I’ve put my pictures from the event up over on my flickr account (I’ll link to specific pictures in the write-up).

I’m walking around checking out buildings on the Downtown Living Open House today, but I only made it to two before I had to break for lunch. I started at the PE Lofts building, where they had two units fully furnished as demos. It’s a cool building; I took some pictures and I’ll put those online later this afternoon. Then I walked over to the...
A Designed in Problem
By Eric Richardson — February 25, 2005
Twice a week I take the DASH D route up to the Gateway Transit Center on my way to work. Today we had to make two detours. One was to get around filming on the Spring Street side of City Hall, the other was to loop around brick repairs at the Gateway Transit Center. I can’t find a picture of the brickwork itself, and I felt more like getting into work and...
Fire in the Garment District

I was a bit under the weather last night / this morning so I doubt any sirens could possibly have woken me, but abc7’s website tells of a “spectacular fire” in the garment district this morning. Firefighters were sent to the 800 block of South San Pedro Street at 5:41 a.m., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The flames...

The Daily News and LA Times both have recaps today of last night’s Grand Ave. project meeting. I had another meeting scheduled last night, but then when it got cancelled completely forgot that this was going on as well. In any case, the first phase looks to be housing heavy – at least 2,000 units. There are other meetings around the city if you missed...
Dr. Gene Scott
By Eric Richardson — February 22, 2005
Scanning the news before I head to bed I see that Downtown televangelist Dr. Gene Scott died Monday afternoon. His website doesn’t yet reflect the news. I never could quite make out what he was preaching about when I would tune past his broadcasts on local tv. That whiteboard was always jammed full of notes, half in greek or hebrew. The question I have...
Urban Nature

There’s a 12-story waterfall coming off the back of the Spring Street Lofts building right now. There’s a drain pipe right there, so I’m guessing that’s just not doing the job fast enough and the water’s skipping right over it. It looks pretty cool. I walked over to 7th+Fig for lunch during a dry spell, but there’s no way...
Too Loud for My Tastes
By Eric Richardson — February 19, 2005
There’s a little place on the NW corner of 6th & Spring that I go to every couple of days to get a sandwich. Today I was in there and apparently the building owners are doing some sort of work in the basement involving perhaps a jackhammer. In any case it was pretty loud and you could feel the sandwich shop’s floor and counter vibrating. The nice...
