Touring Westside Architecture via Bike
By Eric Richardson

I’ve mentioned before that I’m really enjoying the group bike rides that are popping up around LA. Last night I went on RIDE-Arc, a loosely architecture-themed ride put together by some students from Downtown’s SCI-Arc. It wasn’t a Downtown ride, meeting at La Brea and Sunset and heading west to UCLA, but I started from Downtown so I think...

If you read German you might be interested in checking out this GEO Magazine article on Downtown LA. I can’t read German, so if you do I’ll take your word on it. The babelfish translation leaves much to the imagination: 4000 LOFT and free-hold flats developed, 10000 further geplant-und the road life develop in similarly high speed: A restaurant...

The Filming Mesh

Jan Perry wants DWP to report on the idea of a network of “infrastructural nodes” scattered Downtown for filming uses. The text of the motion, which was seconded by Eric Garcetti, hasn’t made it online yet, but when it does you’ll find it here on the City Clerk’s site. So here’s all I know right now: (Perry - Garcetti) requesting...

Qantas Crews Still Not Fans of Downtown
By Eric Richardson

The crazy story of Qantas crews who say they’re in danger venturing outside in Downtown continues. If you don’t remember, back in May Qantas moved its crew hotel from Pasadena to the Bonaventure. The crews complained, and said that homeless people were stealing food off their trays at fast food places. Of course then in June three Qantas employees...

Exploring Downtown's Industrial Side by Bike

I took advantage of the nice weather this afternoon, hopping on my bike to explore more of Downtown. It’s funny, I’ve lived Downtown for a year and a half now but I still feel like I take these trips as a tourist. There are so many great places to wander without going far at all. Today’s destination was the southern end of Downtown’s...

Lofts Beneath My Very Nose

Sometimes residential projects Downtown just sneak up on me. For instance, earlier this week I saw some wooden overhang go in over the sidewalk of the building across the street from work. I wondered what kind of construction they were doing. Turns out that the building at the NE corner of 7th & Flower is actually the future “Roosevelt Lofts”...

A Weekend Question about Photos

It’s the weekend, so I think this is a good time to ask a question about the site. What do you think about those images over in the left sidebar? I mean, I hope for all of you the answer is that you like them, but more specifically… How do you think their presentation could be different to improve your interaction with them? Do you look over there...

It may not say it on the door, but the Camille’s at 7th and Hope now offers Saturday hours. I mentioned back in October that I was excited for how new eating choices were improving Downtown streets. In the comments we had a discussion on how tough it is for these new places on this side of Downtown to attract weekend business. Camille’s had opened...

This may not be news to those of you living in the Old Bank District, but last night was the first I had seen that Lost Souls Cafe is now open. I first mentioned its coming way back in June of last year after hearing about the project at a Neighborhood Block Grant meeting. It took a bit longer to open than they thought it would, but the cafe is now open and it...

Google Maps Zooms In

So sometime fairly recently Google Maps added some new resolution to the satellite views you could get over the web. They’ve had the extra resolution in Google Earth, but previously the web maps were limited in their max zoom. Some of the new views, though, are pretty disconcerting. Check out this view of 777 Tower appearing to lean ominously over parking...
