Highrise Delivery

If you live in the Historic Core and got woken up this morning by a loud whirring, you weren’t imagining things. At 8:15 a giant helicopter – the kind with the hollow belly that lifts buses in movies – descended on Downtown and hovered over the old City National Bank building. It stayed there for a minute or two, and then disappeared out of...

Imagining Alternate Uses for Surface Parking
By Eric Richardson

The other day Curbed LA linked to a really interesting proposal to turn surface parking lots to alternate uses in off-peak times. The proposal, developed as a graduate thesis by USC landscape architecture student Veenu Jayaram, would use the lots for parking during the work-week and turn them into parks and recreational courts during the off-peak. I don’...

Skid Row Walk Recap

So yesterday I went on the monthly Skid Row Neighborhood Walk. If you want proof, you can check out this picture on Don Garza’s blog, featuring me and a couple other people that look vaguely like ghosts. Walking down San Pedro between 6th and 7th in the evening is one crazy experience. I’ve been around a lot of Skid Row, but nothing really struck...

So What's Up With Downtown Parking?
By Eric Richardson — March 02, 2006
I didn’t make it to tonight’s Downtown Parking Study meeting up at the DWP building, but I’d be interested to hear from anyone who did. What did you take away from the meeting? Did you get a feeling anything was actually going to happen based on this study?

Join the Skid Row Neighborhood Walk
By Eric Richardson — March 01, 2006
I’ve previously mentioned the Skid Row Neighborhood Walk, but tonight I intend to actually make it out to one. CCEA is working closely with Councilmember Jan Perry, Skid Row residents, LAPD, state and county legislators, service providers and a multitude of other stakeholders to affect positive policy changes for our community. Our monthly walks have...

Fire at the Roosevelt
By Eric Richardson — February 28, 2006
It doesn’t look all too serious at this point, but lots of trucks have responded to a fire in Roosevelt Building at the corner of 7th and Flower. The building is currently undergoing residential conversion, so the flames are likely the result of work being done. You can see some smoke starting to rise, but right now it’s pretty wispy. As you can...

Just in case you ever need to know, the new Metro ticket machines now in place on pretty much every Metro rail line except the Red Line will take a maximum of thirty coins. When you do, however, put your thirty nickels in only to find out it won’t take any more you can simply push the cancel button to be given a shiny dollar coin and two quarters. Need...

Question about Downtown Lunch Options
By Eric Richardson
— February 24, 2006

So here’s a good Friday afternoon question: what are your favorite places for Downtown lunch delivery? At work we get Friday lunch delivered in, and each time we choose where to get food from I feel like there have to be all these great little places that I just don’t know about. Twice recently we’ve ordered from Arda’s Cafe, on 6th just...

Mapping Downtown

You can search for buildings by name, by address or find residential buildings by type and status. You can even query by pet friendly buildings or live/work lofts. I think the app’s pretty cool, but then again I would think that. I started at Cartifact back at the beginning of the year and I’ve put a lot of time into this thing over the past month...

New Life for the Bank of Italy Building?
By Eric Richardson

There are a few buildings Downtown that I’ve always been curious about. One of them is the building on the northwest corner of 7th and Olive – either the Bank of Italy building or Giannini, depending on where on the building you look. It’s one of those cool old buildings that’s seemed to sit completely vacant. Definitely no ground floor...
