Morphosis Out from Grand Ave Team

By Eric Richardson — April 20, 2005

Architectural Record News today reports that Thom Mayne's firm Morphosis is off the Grand Ave team. It was after spending time reviewing initial concepts, as well as comments from public and team meetings that Related came to the conclusion that Morphosis wasn’t the appropriate fit for them. “Not every architect is right for every project,” says...

The Conservancy's Spring on Spring event was a couple weeks ago, but that doesn't mean it's too late to gaze at pictures people took. Today I ran across these pictures on the blog sha in LA. Shannon also has a great write-up from the event. And she links back here to blogdowntown in the sidebar, which makes me happy.

CLA Also Likes Trolley Studies

By Eric Richardson — April 20, 2005

On a more fun note, the CLA also weighed in the other day advising Council to let the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) go ahead and award a $100,000 contract to the IBI Group to study the feasibility of a Downtown trolley system. I mentioned this last Monday, and also talked more extensively about the RFP back in December. Now, though, we get the fun details...

CLA Weighs in on LATC

By Eric Richardson — April 20, 2005

I know some of you are probably getting tired of my coverage of this issue, but I think it's important enough to the community that it should get whatever space it needs. I'll try to make this summary short and throw the rest of my analysis into the body, though. As I reported on April 5th, the City Council's Budget and Finance Committee asked the Chief Legislative...

Blocking Off City Hall

By Eric Richardson — April 19, 2005

Fun times Downtown this evening... DLANC's Arts Committee was supposed to meet at 7pm on the 10th floor of City Hall. Jason Waters and I were the first to arrive, and were greeted on 1st St. by General Services Police vehicles and flares blocking off the lanes closest to City Hall. The perimeter of South Lawn had officers standing at regular intervals. One...

Downtown News Talks about Bikes

By Eric Richardson — April 18, 2005

The Downtown News snuck two articles by me in the Health Section this week. With the 2005 Bike Show coming up this weekend, Kathryn Meese takes a focus on cycling. In "Gearing Up" we read that: This year the ninth annual expo rolls into Downtown Los Angeles April 23-24, and there will be no shortage of things to see, do and ride. Inside South Hall G,...

Ventura County Star Drops Gauntlet on Coles v. Phillipe

By Eric Richardson — April 17, 2005

Now anyone who's been to Downtown likely knows that we have two establishments which both claim to have created the french dip sandwich: Cole's at 6th and Main, and Philippe the Original over on Alameda by Union Station. I don't know that anyone's going to be able to settle that debate. But today the Ventura County Star drops a new claim (registration required...

April Art Walk Round Up

By Eric Richardson — April 15, 2005

I have to admit something up front here: my gallery count this month was a little low. It was Downtown Art Walk night this evening. I ended up spending a decent portion of the evening at Pete's, and the pre-party this month was definitely at my place, but in the middle I did manage to catch a few galleries. The shows I caught were amazing. This month I tried...

DLANC: April Board Meeting Wrap-Up

By Eric Richardson — April 13, 2005

Yesterday was the April meeting of DLANC's Board of Directors. It wasn't a particularly full agenda, but a few things of interest need to be highlighted here. The biggest topic of the night was the Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC), a topic on which you've seen a lot of discussion here. The Latino Theatre Company was well represented, even though the content...

Council on LATC: Decide Later

By Eric Richardson — April 13, 2005

The issue of the LATC went before the full Council today. I'm not going to rehash anything, since you can get all that in previous posts. The motion before the Council was to receive and file the RFP, with a recommendation to reject all bids. The Council did not do that, instead choosing without objection to continue the matter until the May 4th Council meeting...
