I read Martin Kaplan's opinion piece on the Civic Center park over the weekend, but didn't realize until I received an email just now that the Lear Center has set up a website to receive submitted park ideas -- Grand Intervention. The Los Angeles Times has offered its pages, and the Lear Center its Web site, for such a competition. Proposals can address landscape...

A Busy Downtown Night
By Eric Richardson — July 15, 2005
I got home from work tonight, took a shower, threw on some walking shoes (well, shoes at least), and headed out to see what I could see. There was quite a lot out there. First thing I walked past was Pershing Square. Say what you will about the "park" itself, but one thing has always fascinated me about the people there. On the grass on the north side of...

July Art Walk Report

As I mentioned the other day, last night was this month's edition of the Downtown Art Walk. I made it to seven galleries, but for the first time didn't make it over to the Nickel. I stepped into Bert Green Fine Art and LACDA on Wednesday, though, so maybe that sort of counts. I heard that eecue was out taking pictures last night, so I expect to see shots...

eecue Making Maps Like He was a Cartographer
By Eric Richardson — July 14, 2005
eecue has been showing off some cool goole-fu over the last few days. He's been scanning in photos from Los Angeles From An "Auto" (Part One -- Part Two, a 1906 book with pictures of a lot of Downtown buildings. Along with posting the actual pages, he's also taking the pictures and positioning them on a Google Maps interface. His goal is to have the old pictures...

Contraflow Removal Approved by Transportation Committee
By Eric Richardson — July 13, 2005
I just got back my apartment after today's Transportation Committee meeting. This is the meeting where the Spring Street contraflow lane project was to be discussed and a vote taken on whether to pass it on to Council. The summary: they approved to send it on to Council, so it will appear on an agenda there sometime soon. One thing that worries me is the way...

Tomorrow night is the July Downtown Art Walk. If you haven't been to one yet, shame on you! Seriously, they're a lot of fun, even for those of us who know very little about art. I'm not sure if this will get you more excited or just point out the fact that I need to invest in more adjectives, but here's a list of past Art Walk wrap-ups that ran here on blogdowntown...

What's It Like Living Downtown?

I got an email today with some questions that I thought really captured what I hear people asking about Downtown LA. I answered it; and also asked if I could post the question and answer on the website. He agreed, and here it is. I'd love to hear how others would answer the same questions. I am a native Los Angelino (grew up around the Fairfax / Melrose area...

A Little More Perspective on Spring Street and Contraflow

As I've mentioned before, the issue of the Spring Street contra-flow lane goes to the City Council's Transportation Committee tomorrow at 2pm. I'll be at the meeting, and I'll be testifying that as a resident I think that this will be a good thing for the neighborhood. That's the point I want to make clear; even as I write that widening the street will speed...

Tonight I made my way over to the Golden Gopher for a blogger get together put on by Sean and the rest of the blogging.la peoples. Oddly, I've lived Downtown for a bit over a year now and had never been to the Gopher, so I guess I had to end that streak at some point. I really enjoyed how they've laid out the room and the way the windows onto the brick wall...
