Susana Benavidez
Susana Benavidez grew up in the Westlake area until her family moved to “the better side of town” (relatively): Boyle Heights, where she attended Roosevelt High School.
Life’s shifty terms only provided a brief stint at Loyola Marymount University. Susana works for the City Of Los Angeles Department of Public Works in Accounts Receivable. She has two daughters: Isabella and Eliza, both three but born ten and a half months apart.
Bringing attention to the lack of quality education in Los Angeles is a goal and passion. She lives in Downtown's South Park neighborhood, where she hopes to stay for a very, very long time.

It seems like I have been looking for a school since Bella and Iza were kicking in my belly: first there was the traumatic daycare hunt that aged me five years, then the pre-school stressor and now the hovering animal called Kindergarten. To keep other Downtown parents from my fate, this series will showcase schools and day cares that can save your sanity, beauty...

The conversations range from scoring tickets to the Yo Gabba Gabba show at the Shrine in November to whether...

|Photo Gallery| This Saturday I woke up early and rushed to make breakfast, go for a run and get the girls ready for another treat at the W.M. Keck Foundation Children's Amphitheater at Walt Disney Concert Hall. World City -- a free event for families with an international roster of performers and artists -- is the type of event you wake up early for and do all you can to attend...

There is only so much reporting you can do from your computer or phone- so on Friday, March 20th, Danielle Duran, Kathleen McMullin, General Jeff and I visited 9th Street Elementary to meet the new principal, Ms. Anne Barry. The school grounds were clean, the children loud and happy. They waved as we walked by, and the administrative assistant was very kind...

The Puppeteer that Pulled My Heartstrings

Last weekend I had the pleasure and good fortune to attend the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre hosted by World City at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The program is completely free and a true hidden gem in Downtown. Vit Horejs, the puppeteer and artist, was heart-warming, engaging and really funny – sometimes with a dry humor like when proclaiming a...
