DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Just now I was walking up 5th St., between Los Angeles and Main. Five or six white girls, probably in their twenties, were walking the other direction. A couple had conference style hanging nametags on. Quote of the day, said quietly by an older black man leaning against the wall with a cane:

Y’all aren’t from around here, are you?

I’m going to have to think they weren’t.
