I just got this via email and had to pass it along:

Just in case anyone in downtown is interested, for one more day there is a historic 1927 steam locomotive fired up on track 13 at Los Angeles Union Station. The locomotive is part of an educational outreach program for 5th grade students, designed to educate them about railroad safety and the historic and continuing relevance of railroads. For more information check out http://www.sbrhs.org/education.html

This locomotive is also part of LA’s rail history as it was the first Santa Fe locomotive to pull a passenger train into the new Los Angeles Union Station in 1939. It was also the last steam locomotive to pull a passenger train from San Diego to Los Angeles in 1953.

Very cool. I may just have to bike over to Union Station at lunch.

The response 3751 engenders is remarkable. Every year in Fullerton the first weekend of May they have a Railroad Days celebration (partly to help raise funds for an eventual railroad museum) in the parking lot next to the train station. Twice they have arranged for 3751 to be one of the attractions. Hoo, boy! When it arrived and left hordes of steambuffs were present to take pictures, chase the train, etc. It was like the train was a rock star.
