Streets Staying Small for Now

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — In March I wrote about a motion by Jan Perry that would hold South Park street widening funds in escrow until the new rules on street widths (requested back in July 2005) are completed. I didn't notice until just now that this motion was passed on June 2nd and received the Mayor's concurrence this week.

I believe the particular attention on South Park is due to the widening rules only applying to new construction, but the battle between street width and sidewalks doesn't end there. Tom Gilmore is currently picking up the fight to save the large sidewalk space on the 2nd street side of the Caltrans building. The City intends to widen that one block of 2nd as part of the new LAPD headquarters construction.
