DLANC Candidates Set: Come Vote, But Not for Me

Wednesday marked the last day for candidates to file their paperwork and run in DLANC’s upcoming election (September 12th). The official list of verified candidates is now set and public. Monday, August 21st, marks the last day to turn in absentee voter requests so if you would enjoy voting from your home or office rather than making it to Macy’s Plaza you best get that in. The form can be found on the DLANC website as a PDF. I’d encourage anyone who is a stakeholder in Downtown to make plans to turn out and vote.

But don’t come out to vote for me. Yes, I am running (for the Area-Wide Resident Artist seat) but I’m unopposed and write-in candidates aren’t allowed. So don’t waste a vote on me – go place your mark on one of the disputed contests instead. 15 of DLANC’s 27 seats have a single candidate. That includes all eight of the business seats. But that means twelve seats are up for grabs. Here are the races you should be paying attention to. I’ll list the unopposed seats after the jump.

I’ll be glad to post statements from any candidates who send them to me. Heck, I guess that way I can find out who reads the site.

Names that are links point to candidate statements that have been sent to me and have run on the site.

I'm don't know anything about Genevieve Liang, but she has to be better than aging party queen Junior (Russell) Brown. There---I've marked my ballot for Genevieve Liang, resident-Area-Wide.

It's interesting that Junior (Russell) Brown is touting his group OutinDowntown as an achievement. From the very beginning, the group has been nothing but a bunch of drinking buddies.

However, the most telling thing about this is Brown's inability to hold the group together. It used to meet at least 3 times a month---two times in a bar (of course!) and a more elaborate alcohol party elsewhere.

Now the bar meetings have been canceled because of low attendance, and the only other get togethers are rare events held in Junior's 4th Street apartment---which are also poorly attended. If Brown cannot hold together a bunch of drinking buddies, then how can he function well as an at-large NC rep?

Also, check this out: Brown claims in his campaign statement that one place he may be found is at Pete's drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon! Well, at least we know where to find him, but will his drinking continue at NC meetings???

Genevieve Liang is clearly a better choice.

i think it's a sad commentary on genevieve liang's candidacy is that the best support she can drum up is a couple of people (or is it one person?) with some sort of beef with russell.

come on, the stakes are really low here -- i expect more drama!

Gentlemen --

While I appreciate your early votes of confidence (or counter-inconfidence), I invite you to read my candidate's statement which should be posted within the next day or two, and then make a solid decision. I do not know Russell Brown personally, and prefer the discussion steer clear of social sniping.

If you are able to attend the candidates' forum on 9/7, please introduce yourselves...I look forward to meeting you.

My wife and I both will be endorsing Genevieve Liang as Area Wide. We just recently moved to the area and have had the privilege of meeting Genevieve and sharing some of the same concerns. As an active and aware member of the community, but without a lot of the time to dedicate to such a position, I feel Genevieve’s accessibility and shared interest in a better downtown living will provide us the voice of reason we need. Her accessibility is certainly more than that of reaching out at the bar - as one can find her just about anywhere in downtown – at any time of day; from the library at 9 at night to perhaps 5 blocks the other way at 6 in the morning. And you’ll find her open for discussion, with a genuine interest in finding solutions for even the little things.

I would certainly urge my new neighbors to vote Genevieve.

Did Ned Lamont have "some sort off beef" with Lieberman over his wholesale support of Bush's war? Was Lamont "social sniping"?

Brown posted his campaign statement on newdowntown and referred to his founding and leadership of OutinDowntownLA as an achievement that should be considered as one reason to vote for him. Therefore, it makes sense to examine the nature of this male group.

Also, in the same statement Brown claims that he wants to "create communications, entertainment and social networks for new residents & businesses." It is only logical that voters examine the sort of "entertainment and social networks" that he has in mind.

He originally asked for a "bottle of booze" for entry for his gay male Out parties. Only public outcry stopped him from continuing to do that. This sort of thing is something voters need to know before they make a choice.

I had originally planned to vote for Brown. He is clearly a good organizer, even though his efforts are often misdirected. Genevieve Liang, however, has offered compelling goals and the testimony from her neighbors indicates that she is the better choice.

All of this is about history, issues and NC candidates. Where's the beef?
