Quick Bits for Friday Afternoon
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — In view: Continuing in the pattern of the Mandell and Pan American, the front of the Eastern Columbia is now visible (pictured).
Old and New: Rico has a great series going over at Angelenic called Old vs. New. He's taking a look at restoration work done on various Downtown buildings. So far he's included the Elden Hotel, SBC Tower, Chapman Building, Pan American and St. Vibiana's.
Another Look: Michael Gazzano, a USC student, has put together a stitched panorama going up and down Broadway between 3rd and 9th. He ran across the photos I shot thanks to the column we won't mention.

I was out for a walk last night. I see the scaffolding on the 9th Street side of the Eastern Building has now been removed. My only worry is the inevitable tagging. That's a lot of exposed glass, particularly on the 9th Street side, which is poorly lit. On the weekend, they had some security keeping an eye on things. But, I think that was to watch over the new concrete they'd just poured. Still, very tempting target for taggers.
# on Jan.16.2007 AT 07:45 AMThe plate glass on the new Rite-Aid is now covered with scratch tags. I wish they had been able to get the security gates on the building before installing the glass. Hopefully other new developments will learn from this and cover themselves.
# on Jan.16.2007 AT 09:01 AMI'm continually puzzled that builders don't seem to learn this elementary lesson. Install your defences before deploying the glass.
# on Jan.16.2007 AT 09:49 AMTonight, I see the 9th Street side of the Eastern Building has been lit up and there is security watching over the site.
