Pershing Square Tries Meet Up, Round Two

Pershing Square Invite For the second year in a row, Pershing Square is hosting a "Meet Your Neighbors" event on June 3rd. They invite you to bring a picnic, enjoy live music, and find out what's happening Downtown this summer from noon to 4pm.

Last year's event fell directly in the middle of our "Tape Watch", but this year's should at least offer the use of the entire park.

The event flyer (PDF; pictured) features one of the park's earlier post-garage looks. It's not a design that I'm particularly fond of, though I'd certainly like it better than today's concrete square. As was noted here a few weeks ago, the square may again be redesigned as part of the upcoming Park Fifth project.

I'm willing to bet the blogdowntown picnic this past weekend had a better turnout than this thing will. Looks like you guys had fun. Hopefully, I can make it next time. And congratulations on BDT 2.0.

My problem with Pershing Square is the fact that discussions are heating up about what might be done with it as part of Park Fifth. Great. Question is, why didn't the city do something about it anyway? I've heard and read countless compaints from people about how uninviting PS is. I went for the ice skating this season, and even then it seemed sketchy and unattractive.

Do this now! The people want park!

By the way... have any renderings been released for a new Pershing Square?

With, at least, residential projects the developer is required to make a payment equal to a certain percentage of the project budget to the park and rec department for creating or developing parks within a certain radius of the project. The developer may specify the park the funds should be used on. I think that is what we are seeing here.

There were no funds to upgrade the square before. Now there are (provided the project moves forward.)

Bring it on. I think they could save some money by handing out sledge hammers to people at this gathering.

I was there last year and the place was almost empty, I hope this year is better.

Might be a good idea in the future to rotate the venue. Pershing Square invites a rather negative discussion. It would be nice if the venue tended towards the beautiful.

1) The Cornfields would be good.

2) Grand Hope Park is always dear to my heart.

3) The rooftop park at Disney Hall.

4) The plaza at the Cathedral.

5) The Central library has a couple of lovely outdoor patios. The park out front is good, too.

6) Olvera Street has plenty of open spaces.

7) Union Station has a number of beautiful gardens.

8) The rooftop garden at the New Otani Hotel is another delightful venue.

9) Angels Knoll would be fun, particularly when Angels Flight is finally back in service.
