DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — By chance or design, the new Piccomolo Italian Ice Cream in Little Tokyo opened its doors Tuesday during the Little Tokyo/Arts District Farmers Market and the ice cream selections are promising. Business was brisk, surely helped by the heavier foot traffic the market gives (gave) Weller Court. People were ducking in to get samples on those tiny spoons.
Piccomolo is in a ground floor retail space in the sharp corner of a building. Evidently a travel agency was once there according to a local.
This soft grand opening, of course, beats the very quiet Pinkberry located down the street, across from the Japanese Village Plaza. Similar in taste and texture is JVP’s Ceflore Italian Yogurt that is right in between Little Tokyo’s famed Mikawaya Mochi Ice Cream and long-time shop Little Tokyo Ice Cream.
Now really, how much ice cream or yogurt can one really need?
Comments
Wow, that opened fast! I was just there the other day and there was still drywall on the walls… Interesting, and thanks for letting us know.
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 02:51 PMdennis, i’m not sure if this is what you’re waiting for, but i have to ask:
that’s great, but what about ‘gina? is there an open ‘gina in little tokyo yet?
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 03:51 PMTry Again! Celia, I think that the summertime ice cream social you were calling for should be held in Little Tokyo. With all the different varieties of ice cream, gelato, and yogurt available, there should be something to satisfy every palate. Unless they’re still obsessed by the tantalizing but still unopened ‘Gina.
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 03:53 PMi was blinded by my quest for ‘gina. i almost forgot about the ice cream social. dennis, thanks for reminding us and what a great idea for a location!
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 04:02 PMI was waitin’ for that. Ice cream social is what I had in mind. Where else but the land of “hello kitty?”
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 04:27 PM‘gina and ice cream . Hmmmm…. Sounds like a winning combination
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 04:53 PMI look forward to checking out Pinocchio, I mean, Pikachu, I mean, Piccomolo.
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 05:03 PMMaybe we should start calling the area… “The Ice Cream District”… sounds catchy ?
“Ice Cream Alley” “Ice Cream Row”… but I think over saturation is not a good thing, at least not until the Metro Goldline station opens in Little Tokyo.
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 06:37 PMWhy hasn’t anyone gone ice cream crazy in the Historic Core yet?
The cooler at the Spring Street Market just isn’t cutting it now that summer has arrived.
Guide me, you wise ones of the land of frozen treats.
I’m at the point of considering taking the Red Line to Hollywood and Highland and then walking over to LaBrea for Masthi Malone’s.
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 08:47 PMOkay, so I finally looked up that ‘gina thing. And, I’m in. I think we could camp out and wait to get in.
Second thing - how about the Dessert District.
And, now I want some friggin’ ice cream, and all I’ve got is stupid applesauce.
# on Jul.11.2007 AT 10:10 PMI actually like this place, they have one in Old Town that just has opened as well. The Fruit ice cream hits the spot for those of us who like ice scream sans chocolate.
# on Jul.12.2007 AT 01:36 AMI know where I’m going on my lunch break, today…
# on Jul.12.2007 AT 11:37 AMThe Ice Cream District! Open on Sundaes! That’ll get some tourists coming down there.
Let’s also have a branch of Bennett’s, Mashti Malones and Lickety Split Frozen Custard. And just to be completists about it, why not Cold Stone, Ice Pan, Baskin-Robbins and Dairy Queen. And, somebody re-open C.C. Brown’s (birthplace of the hot fudge sundae) while we’re at it.
# on Jul.12.2007 AT 04:23 PMDon’t forget to bring back Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor just so Los Angeles could rediscover the long forgotten image of people proudly bearing ribbon adorned buttons proclaiming “I MADE A PIG OF MYSELF AT FARRELL”S”
# on Jul.12.2007 AT 05:24 PMoh dear god, no. i used to work at farrell’s when i was in high school. my manager would follow me around beating the drum when i was hungover.
# on Jul.12.2007 AT 05:44 PMSomebody IS trying to resurrect Farrell’s. There’s one up in Santa Clarita which opened not too long ago. I haven’t been there yet but I’ve been meaning to go.
Farrell’s was fairly wide-spread across the country because we had them when I was growing up in New Jersey.
# on Jul.13.2007 AT 03:50 AMOMG - no Cold Stone.
If anything - get an A&W so that I can enjoy my current “must have with every meal” Root Beer Float.
I’m thirsty.
