Ice Cream Social: All are Invited

Celia at 5th and Spring had a good idea to hold an Ice Cream Social for those who attended the blogdowntown picnic last May and we have a date set now. The very informal gathering will be Sunday, August 19 at 3pm in Weller Court, next to the new Piccomolo Italian Ice Cream shop at 2nd and San Pedro.

Of course, anyone who reads our respective blogs are invited. Holding the social that day gives a break from the heat for those attending the Tofu Festival. Also, it allows those coming in for the Nisei Week a chance to mingle before the new Grand Parade attraction, the Nebuta Floats, start at 6pm.

Little Tokyo has a number of frozen choices in the Japanese Village Plaza (even if Pinkberrys doesn't open). There's Mikawaya Mochi Ice Cream that's been part of Little Tokyo since 1910. Little Tokyo Yogurt and Ice Cream has the basic ice cream selections. Ceflore Italian Yogurt gives Pinkberrys a run for their money. Grab something there, or whatever choices may be at the festival booths.

Not to be negative, the the West Adams Heritage Association (WAHA) has been holding Ice Cream Socials for many years. The only difference between WAHA and what you are doing is that WAHA provides the ice cream.

Meeting at a public court and having everyone buy their own ice cream is fine, but what WAHA does is much nicer. And don't talk about the expense. Ralphs would give you at least $25 worth of food towards the event (trust me, I speak from experience), and in the case of the new Ralphs downtown, the manager would probaby give much more. (We got money from Vons too.)

It just takes someone willing to spend the time asking and then shopping and then setting up. But then it is truly a neighborhood ice cream social.

Tim,

Thanks for volunteering…I like Rocky Road, Strawberry or Coconut and Pineapple ice cream. Good thing you are not a negative person.

The blogdowntown picnic held back in May had great a contribution by the Los Angeles Pizza Company, so we are aware of the generosity a business can offer a group as informal as downtown bloggers, or as organized as charitable non-profit 501(c)3 active since 1983.

However, with the informal setting, the two festivals, and the downtown blogger manifesto of supporting community––buying our own ice cream seem appropriate. Preserving community is not just about saving homes in a Preservation Overlay Zone, but buying a few items once in a while.

Our renegade use of the term "Ice Cream Social" doesn't take away from the purpose of this little gathering; a chance to sample multiple choices from franchise or mom/pop stores then share comments in person.

Besides, each store is already doing their share of donations for Nisei Week.

You did inspire a new name since we fall short of being an ice cream social in a purest sense. Anyone up for calling it this "The Downtown Blogger Ice Cream Anti-Social"?

Sounds great Ed! I'm going to the Tofu Festival anyway and will swing by and meet some of you other bloggers. I'm sure I'll have a great sunburn going by then and need some cooling off.

Great job in getting this informal gathering so ice cream/gelato/frozen yogurt on such a hot day. Can't wait for the next downtown meet and greet. BTW - the dogs say "hello"

"Ice Cream Anti-Social". That is hilarious! Absolutely brilliant. Instead of attempting the middle-aged gentility of the West Adams Heritage Association's "Ice Cream Social", the name "Ice Cream Anti-Social" sets the event apart and gives it just the right kind of edge for downtown. Ed Fuentes, you are a genius.
