Last year's Detour Festival brought thousands of concertgoers into the heart of the civic center to enjoy 4 stages filled with a plethora of talent. This year, Detour is back, with over 20 bands, again on 4 stages.

The promoter of the event, Goldenvoice, was cool enough to hook us up with 4 pairs of tickets to give away to you guys, our readers. So if you want to have a rocking time this weekend, hear good bands, and party with tens of thousands of folks in Downtown LA, now's your chance.

Here is how to win: In the comments, tell us your favorite bands from the lineup, and why you think you should win. Make sure to use your real name and email in the comment so we can put you on the list. The tickets will go to the 4 most creative comments as judged by me. Winners will be announced tomorrow morning.

WE HAVE WINNERS! The following folks won a pair of tickets that can be picked up at will-call at the main entrance under the Goldenvoice list:

  • Fred Camino
  • Whitman Lam
  • Gary Dauphin
  • James Schmidtke

Not to worry if you didn't win, you can buy tickets here.

My favorite band in the line-up without a doubt is JUSTICE †. I first discovered these guys in 2004 when I heard their remix of "We Are Your Friends" by Simian on a demo reel of my favorite motion graphics studio - BUCK - who happen to be based in downtown (in the old Clifton's Silver Spoon building, along with Seven Grand, the building seems to attract deer based companies). Finally, 3 years later they release an album and it becomes basically the most popular thing and the world - and rightly so.

So I think I should win because me, Justice †, and downtown have been mysteriously connected for 3 years now. Plus, I maybe introduced you to a great motion graphics studio that is based out of downtown, produces nationally renowned work, has great music taste, and whose artists frequent one of the best restaurants downtown, Colori Kitchen (according to the server)!

I like The Raveonettes, mostly for the song "Love in a Trashcan". I think I should win because my love is indeed in a trashcan. However, my love for downtown is alive and kicking. I've lived here nearly four years now, but there is still so much I haven't seen/heard/tasted and Detour sounds like a great event to do all of the above!

they're not a band, but my favorite in the lineup is the comedians of comedy. zach galifianakis, patton oswalt, brian posehn and maria bamford? i fucked them. sure, we were all drunk and this was 20 years ago before anyone ever heard of them, but i think that should get me a pair of tickets.

My favorite band at the festival is Turbonegro. Nothing like a gay norweigen punk band...except maybe a good cheeseburger but that's another story.

Why should I win? I dig downtown, the Detour festival was my highlight of 2006 (Basement Jaxx, whoa) and if I don't go, I'll be the laughing stock of all of my family and friends. You don't want that now, do you?

Well, to tell you the truth, I've never heard of any of these bands, but that's the GOOD PART. This is not mainstream stuff, it is alternative... undiscovered talent.

I just go for the atmosphere and to pick up on hot chicks... oh yeah !!

My favorite band in the line-up is Bloc Party. Why? I guess because I like rock bands whose lead singers are what editor Michael Vazquez describes as "men with weak voices." Kele Okereke has that kind of "weak" voice, but unlike alot of emoish rock types who favor certain a sad, whining, cool register, Okereke belts. His moments of greatest vocal enthusiasm strike me as brave, like they've been bought at what sounds like the risk of physical injury. (Could he manage an upper register shred/screech like Prince's or Jack White's? I doubt it.) Singing with that kind of voice involves a great deal of risk, but there Okereke is anyway getting up on progressively bigger stages and being a star. It's all kind of inspiring and hopeful, really. It makes you feel like if you're young and lucky and daring enough, all kinds of things are possible.

Another reason Bloc Party is my favorite band on the lineup is that they're not Living Colour. For most of the 90s I hung out with folks back east involved in something called the Black Rock Coalition (led by Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid), and although I was sympathetic to the BRC's goal of supporting black outliers and nerds (being one myself and all), the bands the BRC housed and supported felt like boring, obvious, self-righteous, bourgeois pap. Living Colour frontman Corey Glover has a beautiful instrument (definitely not a weak voice!) but the band itself was overrated stadium rock mush.

"Forget Living Colour," I would tell the BRC guys. "Let's talk about bands like Thin Lizzy, where the entire schtick is clearly about being a black nerd and outlier, but the story is encoded or oblique." That conversation was about 10 years too early, I think, but now we could have it because of bands like Bloc Party or She Wants Revenge. (TV on the Radio is a more trad post-BRC band, but that's another comment/set of ticket.)

As for why I should get the ticket, unless Celia elaborates about fucking those three dudes, this is the best rendition of "CUZ THEY ROCK!" that you're going to get. Also, I've never seen Bloc Party live, so you'd be helping me test my theory out. Also also, my likely date has an enormously awful week last week and the surprise would cheer her up.

Hey, this is James again I f'd up my first post, so here it is again. In addition to the above post, with my four favorite bands Block Party, Justice, Turbonegro, and The Raveonettes. I would tour rehabs and colleges across america, miss usa style. Using my big win of the detour festival ticket giveaway at blogdowntown.com as proof of why I should be giving national lectures.

Pardon me for being so damned cynical, but after decades of writing for Flipside, MRR, Ben Is Dead and too many damn rags, mags, newspapers and books, well, what do you expect? Turbonegro is playing? Yeah, I know them; I published an interview with Tom nearly ten years ago in the punk rock zine I published for fifteen years, prior to moving back to New York. Speaking of New York, I am curious if any one can name the band from which Turbonegro ripped off the riff in "Get It On." And then someone mentioned ex-L.A. Caophony's Rev. Al's wife, Margaret Cho. She usta be funny, then, many years afterward—in 2006—she was photographed wiggling out of a strange slug-like costume. Anyone have an idea of the publication in which those shots were published? So yeah, bitch at me for my cynicism. I will be skipping this overpriced mess of "music." -BusTard
